MountRainierNPS Twitter Feed, including Road Opening and Closure Info:

Page History:
March 2009 Original version with 6 camera views, based on the Washington Mountain WebCams webpage
November 2009Added option to show the last 24 hours of NWAC and SNOTEL telemetry data from Mount Rainier below the webcams
December 2009Added code to error-check for missing SNOTEL data
January 2010 Added Mount Rainier Recreational Forecast to the right of telemetry data
Added camera image modification time from webserver for the NPS air quality image (looking SW from the ski dorm)
March 2010Fixed broken links to SNOTEL website
May 2010Fixed unwanted line breaks in SNOTEL telemetry dates on narrow screens
August 2010Updated the parser for Mount Rainier Recreational Forecast (source file from NOAA had changed), and updated the URLs for five NPS webcams which had moved to a new server
November 2010 Fixed a minor bug in the SNOTEL data display, which only occurred between 11pm and midnight and showed the previous day's date for the 0000 hour's data row
March 2011 Fixed a minor quirk in the SNOTEL data display, which only occurred when SNOTEL data is not available at a given site for the previous 24 hours
June 2011 Expanded to 7 camera views and rearranged one camera, adding the new Camp Muir webcam which was installed on May 18 and went live on June 2
November 2011Expanded to 8 camera views, adding the new Longmire webcam
February 2012Updated the URLs from which to download the SNOTEL data, which had recently been changed slightly
July 2012 Expanded to 11 camera views in 3 rows, adding the 2 new Sunrise webcams plus the Crystal Mountain upper gondola terminal webcam
Rearranged some camera images, and added the capability of having wide images span 2 columns as on some other MtnWebCams pages
December 2012 Expanded to 15 camera views in 4 rows, adding 3 cams in Mineral Lake and 1 in Ashford to show conditions along the western road approach
Added notes to the captions for the Sunrise and Camp Muir webcams, which are summer only
Crystal Mountain camera image now includes a timestamp, so don't display image modification time, and use the full-resolution (1280x720) version of the image
Added more code to properly handle the new HTTP Status 404 errors from the SNOTEL server, and other unknown SNOTEL errors, plus added location info for the Paradise SNOTEL site
January 2013Remained at 15 camera views, adding the new Eatonville cam and removing one of the Mineral Lake cams
March 2013 Forced to write a new external script to grab SNOTEL data, after the long-existing SNOTEL data programs on the NWCC website were suddenly redirected to a beta-version report generator
The new script is a major improvement, it displays wind and solar data for any SNOTEL sites which have those sensors, mostly installed within the last few years
Added the nearby Mowich (a very low-snowdepth site just west of the park boundary) and Burnt Mountain SNOTEL sites
Added display of the NWS COOP data (daily manual measurements) for Paradise and Longmire
October 2013 Revised the page layout to use separate tables for each row, to better accommodate the very different widths of images (the Guide House and Longmire webcams were recently upgraded to wider HD format images)
November 2013 Added code to detect the correct wintertime Sunrise and Camp Muir images, which switched to alternate Flickr URLs in October 2013
Expanded to 16 camera views, adding the new Carbon River webcam, and reduced image sizes slightly from 480-360-240 to 440-330-220 pixels high for large-medium-small options
February 2014 Revised code to detect the correct wintertime Sunrise and Camp Muir images, since the source code of the MRNP webcams page had changed
March 2014 Added an option to disable the NPS Air Quality Webcam (by appending "&aq=off" to the URL) if this page is not loading properly, as server issues on that website are often the cause of such problems
Expanded to 17 camera views, adding the new Pierce County Airport (Thun Field) webcam
October 2014Expanded to 18 camera views, adding a new WSDOT cam at Elbe
November 2014 Expanded to 27 camera views in 6 rows, adding several long-distance views of Rainier (Auburn Airport, Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Gig Harbor, Harstine Island, and 4 from Seattle), plus also reinstating one Mineral Lake cam
Added the new Skate Creek SNOTEL site, south of the park, which was installed in October 2014
December 2014 Expanded to 29 camera views, adding 2 more long-distance views of Rainier from Illahee and UW in Seattle, and reduced image sizes slightly from 440-330-220 to 400-300-200 pixels high for large-medium-small options
February 2015 Minor fix to formatting of NWS COOP data (daily manual measurements for Paradise and Longmire) which had changed
March 2015 Expanded to 30 camera views, adding the view from High Camp Lodge at White Pass Ski Area
Updated the parser for the NWS COOP data (daily manual measurements for Paradise and Longmire), the webpage formatting had changed substantially
May 2015Fixed both Mineral Lake webcam URLs which had changed
October 2015Fixed White Pass webcam URL which had changed to a different camera view
November 2015 Commented out code to detect the correct wintertime Sunrise and Camp Muir images, since the source code of the MRNP webcams page no longer contains the actual URLs,
and instead simply added the file modification times below those images to make it more obvious when they are no longer updating during the wintertime months
December 2015 Expanded to 31 camera views, adding the view from Burnett Landing on SR 165, and also added image modification times for the White Pass and KING-TV webcam images which were now missing that info
Reduced image sizes slightly from 400-300-200 to 360-270-180 pixels high for large-medium-small options
Embedded the MountRainierNPS Twitter feed, which as of 2015 has the best available road opening and closure info
January 2016 Expanded to 38 camera views, adding the KOMO-TV Queen Anne and Columbia Tower Cams, Queen Anne Weather Cam, 3 views from Tacoma (including 2 more WSDOT cams), and a very distant view from Poulsbo (74 miles)
Reduced image sizes slightly from 360-270-180 to 320-240-160 pixels high for large-medium-small options, rearranged the order of many images substantially, and revised several image captions
Added location info for all NWAC sites, and updated the external script which grabs NWAC data to generate an HTML table which matches the style of the SNOTEL and MesoWest data, so these WebCams pages can now show an arbitrary mix of NWAC, SNOTEL, and MesoWest telemetry sites in any order
Wrote a new external script to grab data from MesoWest (such as the data from the RAWS telemetry sites), which downloads the data as a CSV file and formats it to match the style of the SNOTEL data
Added 2 nearby RAWS hourly telemetry sites in Ashford and Ohanapecosh which have precip, wind, solar, and other sensors (but not snowdepth -- NOTE: a snowdepth column has subsequently appeared in the Ohanapecosh data after the site was first included here!)
Added the Cayuse Pass SNOTEL and Chinook Pass NWAC sites to the east of Mount Rainier near the park boundary, which were already included on the Crystal Mountain WebCams pages
February 2016 Expanded to 39 camera views in 7 rows, adding the Space Needle Cam, an amazing 360° Roundshot Cam installed on top in late 2014 (see interesting installation info and diagram), figuring out how to grab the still image from this webcam was not obvious at all, but ended up being fairly simple
Later added an annotated graphic above the Space Needle Cam image showing the direction and distance to numerous landmarks (towers, buildings, mountains), and also increased the size of that image to better fill the available page width for large-medium-small options
Major internal PHP code cleanup, updating and/or deleting legacy code left over from very long ago, from the original Washington Mountain WebCams webpage (December 2004) on which this page was based
March 2016 Added the Pierce County Airport, Carbon River precip, and WSDOT Elbe telemetry sites, all with data available via MesoWest, and rearranged the telemetry sites into more logical geographic order
Both KING-TV camera images now include a timestamp, so don't display image modification times
Fixed all Weather Underground camera URLs, which now apparently need "?time()" appended in order to update properly
April 2016Fixed both KING-TV webcam URLs which had changed
