We put our skis on once again and set off up the Muir Snowfield. Visible hundreds of yards behind me are dozens of climbers, marching in antlike columns towards Camp Muir. Many of these groups would be heading for the summit of Rainier early the next day, while we planned a quick ski descent for that afternoon.
