Above and right of the Heart the standard route steepens to a pitch of about 35 degrees, just before it deours around the right edge of the Red Banks. However, this uppermost part of the route now consisted of unappealling scree windswept free of snow. Most parties were instead choosing to climb a more direct route on steep snow through the Red Banks Chimneys. The well-frozen snow up to 45 degrees steep made for much more intersting climbing than the scree route.
