    1920 ft (6300 m) .
Location: Southeast Iceland, northern edge of Vatnajokull,
50 miles (80 km) NW of Hofn
Lat / Long: 64.7° N, 16.7° W
Volcanic Type: Stratovolcano (subglacial)
Volcanic Status: Active, last eruption 1968
First Ascent: Trautz, 1910
First Ski Descent:
Skiable Vertical: up to 4000 ft (1200 m) locally, with
over 6000 ft (1500 m) across Vatnajokull to the coast



Kverkfjoll is the fourth major volcano lying beneath the ice of Vatnajokull, situated on its far northern edge. Two broad outlet glaciers pour out of the Vatnajokull icefield on either side of the high massif of Kverkfjoll, which itself has a smaller outlet glacier pouring out of its throat ("kverkin" in Icelandic, for which the glacier Kverkjokull and the mountain Kverkfjoll are named). A hut located at the head of the Kverkjokull provides another access point to the interior of Vatnajokull.
