Looking northwest from the summit the horizon is dominated by Mount Rainier, about 50 miles distant. I removed my climbing skins, locked down my heels, and set off downhill the way I had come. The firm snows of the summit gave way to perfect corn snow below the false summit. The 2300 vertical foot (700 m) face down to the Lunch Counter is 25-30 degrees steep, the finest skiing on the trip, and I sped down to camp by 4 pm. We broke camp and skied and hiked down the road, reaching the cars utterly exhausted at 7:30 pm.
